এভাবে আমরা দেখছি যে, প্রচলিত ইঞ্জিলগুলো বেনামি লেখকদের লেখা। পরবর্তীকালে এগুলো মথি, মার্ক, লূক ও যোহনের নামে প্রচারিত হয়েছে। এগুলো এ চারজনের লেখা হোক অথবা না হোক, এগুলোর মূল পাণ্ডুলিপি বা লেখকের হাতে লেখা পাণ্ডুলিপিগুলো হারিয়ে গিয়েছে। এ প্রসঙ্গে rotten.com রোমান ক্যাথলিক চার্চের বিকৃতি (Distortions of the Roman Catholic Church) শিরোনামে লেখেছে[1]:

“the survival of the New Testament depend on the work of generation after generation of scribal copyists... War, accident, persecution, factionalism, and the suppression of heresies all played their role in obliterating the original texts (or autographs) as well as the early copies which were made from them. ... Consequently, virtually nothing remains from the early Christian period. The original texts of the New Testament simply no longer exist. The Gospels of Luke, Matthew, Mark, and John only exist as decaying copies of copies -- which themselves may have been heavily edited or marred with accidental errors. What's more, even these early copies are fragmented and few. It should be noted that only 35 of these copies date back to before 400 A.D., and amazingly only 80 manuscript copies date before 800 A.D.”

‘‘নতুন নিয়মের অস্তিত্ব টিকে রয়েছে প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্মের লিপিকারদের কর্মের উপর। ... যুদ্ধ, দুর্ঘটনা, নির্যাতন, দলাদলি, বিভ্রান্ত মত দমন ইত্যাদি কারণে মূল পাঠ (অথবা লেখকের হস্তলিখিত পাণ্ডুলিপি) এবং সেগুলো থেকে অনুলিপি করা প্রাচীন পাণ্ডুলিপিগুলো নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে গিয়েছে। ... প্রারম্ভিক প্রাথমিক খ্রিষ্টান যুগের কোনো কিছুই আর অবশিষ্ট থাকেনি। নতুন নিয়মের মূল পাঠ আক্ষরিকভাবেই নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে গিয়েছে। লূক, মথি, মার্ক ও যোহনের ইঞ্জিলগুলোর ক্ষয়ে যাওয়া অনুলিপির অনুলিপিগুলো টিকে রয়েছে। টিকে থাকা এ সকল অনুলিপিও সম্ভবত ব্যাপকভাবে সম্পাদিত অথবা অনিচ্ছাকৃত ভুলভ্রান্তি দ্বারা বিনষ্ট। এর চেয়েও বড় কথা, এ সকল (সম্পাদিত, ভুলজড়িত ও ক্ষয়প্রাপ্ত) অনুলিপিগুলোরও সামান্য ভগ্নাংশ বা খণ্ডতে অংশই অবশিষ্ট রয়েছে যেগুলোর সংখ্যা খুবই কম। উল্লেখ্য যে, বিদ্যমান এ সব পাণ্ডুলিপিগুলোর মধ্যে মাত্র ৩৫টা পাণ্ডুলিপি ৪০০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের পূর্বের এবং আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে মাত্র ৮০টা পাণ্ডুলিপি ৮০০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের পূর্বে লেখা।’’
