‘টম সয়্যার’ এবং ‘হাকলবেরি ফিনের’ মত জনপ্রিয় কিশোর রোমঞ্চ উপন্যাসের রচয়িতা মার্ক টোয়েন (Mark Twain) নামে খ্যাত আমেরিকার সুপ্রসিদ্ধ সাহিত্যিক স্যামূয়েল ল্যাংহরন ক্লীমেন্স (Samuel Langhorne Clemens: 1835-1910 AD)। তার অনেক বইই বাংলায় অনুদিত হয়েছে। তার লেখা একটা বই ‘Letters from the Earth’ ‘লেটারস ফ্রম দি আর্থ’ বা ‘পৃথিবীর চিঠি’। এ বইটা রচনা করে তিনি তা তার মৃত্যুর পরে প্রকাশের নির্দেশ দেন। তার মৃত্যুর প্রায় অর্ধ শতাব্দী পরে ১৯৬২ সালে তাঁর মেয়ে ক্লারা (Clara) সেটা প্রকাশ করেন। বইটার দশম পত্রে মার্ক টোয়েন এ গণহত্যা বিষয়ে লেখেছেন। একজন বাইবেল বিশ্বাসী, বাইবেল অনুসারী বাইবেলের এ কাহিনী পড়ে কী ভয়ঙ্করভাবে আহত হয়েছেন তা অনুধাবনের জন্য চিঠিটির একটা দীর্ঘ অংশ পাঠকের জন্য উদ্ধৃত করার লোভ সামলাতে পারলাম না।

“Human history in all ages is red with blood, and bitter with hate, and stained with cruelties; but not since Biblical times have these features been without a limit of some kind. Even the Church, which is credited with having spilt more innocent blood, since the beginning of its supremacy, than all the political wars put together have spilt, has observed a limit. A sort of limit. But you notice that when the Lord God of Heaven and Earth, adored Father of Man, goes to war, there is no limit.

He is totally without mercy -- he, who is called the Fountain of Mercy. He slays, slays, slays! All the men, all the beasts, all the boys, all the babies; also all the women and all the girls, except those that have not been deflowered. He makes no distinction between innocent and guilty. The babies were innocent, the beasts were innocent, many of the men, many of the women, many of the boys, many of the girls were innocent, yet they had to suffer with the guilty. What the insane Father required was blood and misery; he was indifferent as to who furnished it.

The heaviest punishment of all was melted out to persons who could not have deserved so horrible a fate - the 32,000 virgins. Their naked privacies were probed, to make sure that they still possessed the hymen unruptured. They were then sold into the shamefulest slavery, the slavery of prostitution to satisfy any buyer with their bodies, be he a gentleman or a course and filthy ruffian. It was the Father that inflicted this ferocious and undeserved punishment upon those bereaved and friendless virgins, whose parents and kindred he had slaughtered before their eyes. And were they praying to him for pity and rescue, meantime? Without a doubt of it. These virgins were ‘spoil’ plunder, booty. He claimed his share and got it. What use had he for virgins? Examine his later history and you will know.

His priests got a share of the virgins, too. What use could priests make of virgins? The private history of the Roman Catholic confessional can answer that question for you. The confessional's chief amusement has been seduction -- in all the ages of the Church. Père Hyacinth testifies that of a hundred priests confessed by him, ninety-nine had used the confessional effectively for the seduction of married women and young girls. One priest confessed that of nine hundred girls and women whom he had served as father and confessor in his time, none had escaped his lecherous embrace but the elderly and the homely. The official list of questions which the priest is required to ask will overmasteringly excite any woman who is not a paralytic.

There is nothing in either savage or civilized history that is more utterly complete, more remorselessly sweeping than the Father of Mercy's campaign among the Midianites. The official report does not furnish the incidents, episodes, and minor details, it deals only in information in masses: all the virgins, all the men, all the babies, all "creatures that breathe," all houses, all cities ....”

‘‘সকল যুগেই মানব ইতিহাস রক্তে রঞ্জিত, বিদ্বেষে তিক্ত এবং নির্মমতায় কলঙ্কিত। তবে বাইবেলীয় যুগ থেকেই এ সবই কোনো না কোনো একটা সীমার মধ্যে থেকেছে, একেবারে সীমালঙ্ঘন করেনি। সকল রাজনৈতিক যুদ্ধ একত্রে যত রক্তপাত করেছে খ্রিষ্টধর্মীয় চার্চ (ঈসায়ী জামাত) ক্ষমতা পাওয়ার পর থেকে একাই তার থেকে বেশি নিরপরাধ মানুষের রক্তপাত করেছে। সে চার্চ বা জামাতও একটা সীমা রক্ষা করেছে। কোনো রকমের একটা সীমা। কিন্তু আপনি দেখবেন যে, বিশ্বজগতের প্রভু সদাপ্রভু ঈশ্বর, মানুষের ভক্তিপূত ভালবাসাসিক্ত পিতা ঈশ্বর যখন যুদ্ধে গমন করেন তখন আর কোনো সীমারেখা থাকে না। যাকে করুণার উৎস ও ঝর্ণা বলা হয় তিনি সম্পূর্ণভাবে নির্দয় হয়ে যান। তিনি শুধু হত্যা করেন, হত্যা করেন এবং হত্যা করেন। সকল মানুষ, সকল প্রাণি, সকল বালক, সকল শিশু, এবং সকল নারী এবং সকল বালিকাও, শুধু যে সকল বালিকার কুমারিত্ব বা সতীত্ব বিনষ্ট হয়নি তারা বাদে।

অপরাধী ও নিরপরাধের মধ্যে ঈশ্বর কোনোই পার্থক্য করেন না। শিশুরা ছিল নিরপরাধ, পশুগুলো ছিল নিরপরাধ, অনেক পুরুষ, অনেক নারী, অনেক বালক ও অনেক বালিকাও ছিল নিরপরাধ। এরপরও তাদেরকে অপরাধীদের সাথে শাস্তি ভোগ করতে হল। কী উন্মাদ পিতা ঈশ্বর! রক্ত ও যন্ত্রণার প্রয়োজন হল তাঁর! এ রক্ত ও যন্ত্রণা কে সরবরাহ করল তা নিয়ে তাঁর কোনোই মাথাব্যাথা নেই। বত্রিশ হাজার কুমারীকে যে শাস্তি দেওয়া হল সম্ভবত এ বীভৎস পরিণতি তাদের পাওনা ছিল না! এ শাস্তির কাছে নির্মমতম শাস্তিও হার মেনে গেল! তাদের সতীচ্ছদ অক্ষত আছে কিনা তা নিশ্চিত হওয়ার জন্য তাদের ব্যক্তিগত অঙ্গ অনাবৃত করে পরীক্ষা করা হল। এরপর তাদেরকে লজ্জাজনক দাসত্বে বিক্রয় করে দেওয়া হল। বেশ্যাবৃত্তির দাসত্বে তাদের বিক্রয় করা হলো। তাদের দায়িত্ব হল গ্রাহককে তৃপ্ত করা। গ্রাহক ভদ্রলোক হউন অথবা ঘৃণ্য নোংরা গু-া হোক, সকলকেই তৃপ্ত করতে হবে।

পিতা-ঈশ্বরই এ হিংস্র শাস্তি প্রদান করলেন। এ শাস্তি তো পাওনা ছিল না। তিনি এ শাস্তি চাপিয়ে দিলেন সেই সব শোকার্ত ও বান্ধবহীন কুমারীদের উপরে যাদের পিতামাতা ও আপনজনদেরকে তাদেরই চোখের সামনে জবাই করা হয়েছিল। এ সময়ে কি তারা ঈশ্বরের কাছে করুণা ও মুক্তির জন্য প্রার্থনা করছিল? নিঃসন্দেহে তারা তা করছিল। এ কুমারীরা ছিল লুটের মাল! ঈশ্বর এ থেকে তাঁর নিজের পাওনা দাবি করলেন! তিনি তাঁর পাওনা পেয়েও গেলেন। তিনি এ সকল কুমারীদের কিভাবে ব্যবহার করেছিলেন? তার পরবর্তী ইতিহাস পাঠ করলেই আপনি তা জানতে পারবেন।

ঈশ্বরের পাদরি-যাজকরাও কুমারীদের একটা অংশ পেয়ে গেলেন। পাদরি-যাজকরা কুমারীদের কিভাবে ব্যবহার করেছিলেন? রোমান ক্যাথলিক চার্চের পাপের স্বীকারোক্তি শোনার ব্যক্তিগত ইতিহাস আপনাকে এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে পারবে।[1] ঈসায়ী জামাত বা খ্রিষ্টীয় চার্চের সকল যুগেই পাপ স্বীকারোক্তির মূল আকর্ষণ প্রলুব্ধকরণ। পিয়ের হাইসিন্থ সাক্ষ্য দিয়েছেন যে, তিনি যে সকল পাদরির পাপ-স্বীকারোক্তি গ্রহণ করেছেন তাদের প্রতি একশত পাদরির মধ্যে নিরানববই জনই বলেছেন যে, তাঁরা তাঁদের পাপ-স্বীকারোক্তি গ্রহণের কর্মটাকে বিবাহিত মহিলা ও যুবতী মেয়েদেরকে তাদের দিকে প্রলুব্ধ করার জন্য ফলপ্রসূভাবে ব্যবহার করেছেন। একজন পাদরি স্বীকার করেছেন যে, তিনি তার কার্যকালে নয় শত যুবতী এবং মহিলাকে পিতা হিসেবে পাপ-স্বীকারোক্তি করিয়েছেন। এদের মধ্যে কেউই তার কামুক আলিঙ্গন থেকে রক্ষা পায়নি। শুধু একান্ত বৃদ্ধরা বাদে। চার্চ কর্তৃপক্ষ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবেই একটা প্রশ্নমালা প্রদান করেন, পাদরিকে পাপ-স্বীকারোক্তির জন্য যে প্রশ্নগুলো করতে হয়। আর একমাত্র পক্ষাঘাতগ্রস্ত মহিলা ছাড়া অন্য যে কোনো নারীকে এ প্রশ্নগুলো অত্যন্ত কার্যকরিতার সাথে উত্তেজিত ও সক্রিয় করে তুলে।

পিতা ঈশ্বর মাদিয়ানীয়দের মধ্যে যে করুণা-তৎপরতা চালালেন, তার চেয়ে নিরেট পূর্ণাঙ্গ, সম্পূর্ণ বিবেক-দংশনমুক্ত ও অনুশোচনা-বিহীন ও সর্বগ্রাসী ধ্বংসযজ্ঞ পৃথিবীর বর্বর ও সভ্য কোনো ইতিহাসেই নেই। বাইবেলের আনুষ্ঠানিক বিবরণীতে ঘটনাবলি, অন্তর্গত উপাখ্যান এবং খুঁটিনাটি বিস্তারিত বিবরণ দেওয়া হয়নি। এতে শুধু সামগ্রিক তথ্য পরিবেশন করা হয়েছে: সকল কুমারী, সকল পুরুষ, সকল শিশু, শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাসগ্রহণকারী সকল প্রাণি, সকল বাড়িঘর, সকল নগর...।’’[2]
